15 SIGNS THAT MIGHT TELL YOU IF
 YOUR BUSINESS SUCK

Posted by  René Volpi via Catherine Faas
There’s no test an entrepreneur can take to determine if their startup will be successful or not. But there are warning signs to look out for once you’ve built your company that might shed some light on the state of your business. See a few of them below:

    Admit it … you’ve wondered.
You’re writing and writing and writing, and a few people say they like it, but you’re just not getting results. Traffic is coming in at a trickle, links are hard to come by, and your comments section is about as lively as a nightclub at breakfast.
And you can’t help wondering …
Do you just need to be patient, waiting for your traffic to snowball?
Or could it be possible that, really, your content sucks (thereby breaking the first rule of Copyblogger), and everyone is just being nice so as not to hurt your delicate artistic feelings?

The hard truth: there’s no way to know for sure

For one, we’re talking about quality, which is subjective by definition. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, and all that jazz.
It’s also a matter of scale. This isn’t American Idol, where you have 30 million people voting, transforming a singer into a superstar through the power of public consensus.
If you’re a beginning blogger, you might have fewer than 100 regular readers, and 20 of them are your friends and family. And let’s face it; your mother is going to like everything you do, no matter how bad it is. That’s her job.
So who are you supposed to listen to?
Well … nobody, and everybody, all at the same time. The maddening thing about creating anything is no one can tell you how to do it, and yet everyone’s opinion can teach you something.
There aren’t any rules, no, but there are warnings. If your content sucks, you’ll see dozens, maybe hundreds of telltale signs, hinting that something is wrong.
I’ve collected 20 of the most common here. Take a look through them, and see if any describe you:

How the World Is Spending Its Time Online [STATS]

So… whatcha doin’ over there on that laptop, denizens of the world? Well, according to a new study from Nielsen showing Internet usage in April 2010, 22% of the time, you’re engaging with social media.
Yeah, 22% might not seem like a mammoth percentage, but you have to take into account the fact that this finding is on a global scale. Also, a few more telling takeaways from the report:
  • Currently, three quarters of InternetInternetInternet users worldwide visit a social network or blog when they go online — that’s a 24% increase over last year.
  • Joe Average (the international version) spends 66% more time on these sites than he did a year ago — for example, your average user spent 6 hours on these sites in April 2010, while last year he spent 3 hours, 31 minutes.
  • FacebookFacebookFacebook, YouTube and WikipediaWikipediaWikipedia make an appearance among the world’s most popular brands.
We’ve seen ample proof of the burgeoning popularity of social media in the past — just two months ago, Nielsen reported similar growth — and it makes sense. Facebook has been giving GoogleGoogleGoogle a run for its money when it comes to traffic, and YouTubeYouTubeYouTube recently surpassed two billion views per day.
We’ll have to see how social media usage shakes out as Facebook continues to accrue users, and YouTube dips its toe into the newsfeed business in an attempt to become a legit news source.
In the meantime, check out a few more highlights from the study:
  • Brazil boasts the largest percentage of Internet users visiting a social network –- 86%
  • Australians spend the most time on social networking sites: an average of 7 hours and 19 minutes in April — the U.S. and Italy came in second and third with six and a half hours each.
  • Facebook has the greatest share of the market in Italy in April 2010, garnering two-thirds of the active unique audience in April 2010. AustraliaAustraliaAustralia, the U.S. and the UK came in on Italy’s heels with more than 60% of active users visiting the site.
How much time do you spend on social networking sites? Has your hunger for social media contributed to this global increase?

Good advice on certain things

Boast a mouth so dirty it could make drunken sailors blush? Well, if your mother, spouse, or priest have requested you to ease back on the four-letter word bombs, don’t listen to ‘em. Researchers say that swearing may help alleviate pain by increasing the heart rate and pushing the brain to a fight or flight state. Interestingly, women appear to benefit more from dropping a barrage of s**t, f*#k, and biznatches. The scientists behind the f**king experiment say more f**king research is needed to fully understand the impact of f**king cursing on the human body.

What better way to kick off the Mother’s Day weekend than with a truly touching chit-chat between a young boy with Asperger’s syndrome and his devoted mother? Sarah Littman sat down with her 12-year-old son Joshua to answer a series of heartfelt questions. StoryCorps recorded the conversation and set it to animation in a short video sure to make you want to give your mom, or any mom, a huge hug.

Body odors hard facts

Posted by  HowStuffWorks.com to Holy Kaw!

Get fast facts on body odor causes, and learn what you can do to control body odor.

For example did you know?

  • Meat eaters smell worse than their vegetarian counterparts, according to a 2006 anthropological study performed in the Czech Republic.
  • Since the eccrine gland produces sweat that is mostly just water and salt, it is not responsible for body odor.
  • Because microorganisms on the skin, called florae, enjoy chomping on fats and proteins, it makes sense that foods heavy in these nutrients would produce a stronger body odor.
  • The apocrine glands remove waste like proteins and fats -- although the sweat they produce does not naturally smell, it develops its odor when it reaches the surface of the skin. Microorganisms found on the skin eat apocrine sweat and produce the body-odor scent as a by-product of metabolism.
